LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky Kingdom held its opening day on Sunday and more than 1,000 were expected into the park.

There are several new attractions at the park. Some of the new rides include "Scream Extreme" and the "Rock 'n' Roller."

Also new this year, the beer garden will now serve 15 types of bourbon and 15 craft beers.

"June and July we’re a lot more busy so this was a nice soft opening it gave all of our team members a chance to really get in gear for the season," Guest Services member Jamie O'Daniel said.

The classic Thunder Run wooden coaster has undergone extensive re-tracking and now delivers a faster and smoother ride experience.

Many park guests tell WDRB News the winter felt longer than normal so they are ready to end their cabin fever.

"We’ve had a lot of cold spells, a lot of snow recently and it’s just nice to get out and finally enjoy the sunshine," said Monique Steiner, who attended opening day with her four children. "It’s just a big time for Kentucky and it’s just amazing to be out here with all these people and enjoying the rides."

For now, Kentucky Kingdom is only open on the weekends.

Hurricane Bay, the water park, opens on weekends beginning on May 19.

Both will be open daily beginning Memorial Day weekend. The park's current hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
