LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Extra equipment was needed to battle two house fires in the Highlands Thursday morning.

It happened around 6 a.m. in the 1800 block of Stevens Avenue, not far from Eastern Parkway and Bardstown Road. Louisville Fire & Rescue Chief Gregory Frederick says a propane tank caught fire and spread to two homes.

He says the first firefighters arrived less than five minutes after receiving the call.

"When they got there they had heavy fire in one dwelling," Frederick said. "We had a propane tank on the rear deck, with fire from that tank impinging on to the dwelling next door. So immediately we had two houses on fire."

Everyone inside both homes made it out unharmed.

It took 42 firefighters 35 minutes to get the fires under control.

"Due to the amount of fire and the close proximity of the houses, we called for some extra units," Frederick said.

Both homes sustained moderate damage. Frederick says the arson unit will conduct an investigation.

"It's too early yet to really give a cause."
