LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The Garland of Lilies is ready to go for Friday's Kentucky Oaks race.

As usual, workers pieced together the Lilies for the Fillies on Thursday night at the Middletown Kroger.

The 20-pound garland contains more than 140 Star Fighter Lilies. The delicate flowers need special treatment, so each has its own vial of water.

"They'll stay in refrigeration tonight. Then, they'll stay in ice tomorrow at the track until it's awarded to the Philly. Then they'll last overnight," said Allison Gousha, the Derby Floral Coordinator.

Attaching the lilies took about three hours, but the much bigger job was making the greenery. That took a team of eight people about eight hours, using 400 bunches of oak ivy and Italian ruscus.

The Garland of Lilies will be delivered to the track Friday morning. Then at 4 p.m., work will begin on the Garland of Roses for Derby, again at the Middletown Kroger.
