LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Monomoy Girl won the 144th Kentucky Oaks on Friday at Churchill Downs.

It was a two-horse race down the backstretch between Monomoy Girl and Wonder Gadot, but the Monomoy Girl pulled away late to win by half a length.

  • Win: Monomoy Girl
  • Place: Wonder Gadot:
  • Show: Midnight Bisou

The Oaks was billed by many as a classic showdown between the best filly from the East vs. the top performer from the West.

Favored Monomoy Girl won the Grade I Ashland Stakes at Keeneland for her trainer Brad Cox, a Kentucky native. Cox also saddled Sassy Sienna and Kelly’s Humor in the Oaks. Monomoy Girl drew the far outside No. 14 post position. Cox was not thrilled but said that a champions prove they can win from any post position.

The result was contested briefly after the race ended due to a slight bump down the back stretch between Monomoy Girl and Wonder Gadot, but it was upheld.

Contested over 1 1/8 miles, the Oaks features a purse of $1 million, with $600,000 to the winner. The official attendance for Oaks Day was 113,510, the fifth-most of all-time.

Here are the payouts for the race:

Monomoy Girl      $7.20      $4.60      $3,60

Wonder Gadot                    $14,00    $7.20
