FRANKFORT, Ky. (WDRB) -- It was an emotional day in Frankfort to honor the lives of those who work to protect their communities, and one who died in the line of duty.

The Kentucky State Fraternal Order of Police remembered 44 peace officers who died in 2017.

One officer killed in the line of duty was also remembered, LMPD officer Nick Rodman.

At the ceremony in Frankfort, a final Taps salute honored those who died.

The keynote speaker Rebecca Grignon Reker lost her husband LMPD officer Peter Grignon in 2005. He was shot and killed in the line of duty, and she knows all too well the sacrifice officers make every day.

"I remember sitting out there, and this is a tough time and I'm so very sorry for your loss, and grateful for your loved ones' sacrifice, how they gave of themselves, how they sacrifice, not getting to go to birthday parties and Christmases, because they were serving the community," Reker said.

The service also included a 21 gun salute.
