LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A section of a busy Louisville road will not close down for two years starting Monday.

The Metropolitan Sewer District announced on Sunday that River Road and Washington Street will remain open indefinitely, as it decides the best way to do the planned construction. .

MSD plans to build part of a Waterway Protection Tunnel where crews will install a shaft to access a sewage tunnel. The $200 million project will protect the city's water system from sewage overflow.

According to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, around 8,000 drivers use that section of River Road on a daily basis. A greater number of drivers use 7th Street to get to River Road.

MSD recommends using the Waze app to keep up with traffic patterns and work around the closure.

The closure had been expected to last until March of 2020.
