MSD's planned closure of River Road delayed indefinitely
River Road and West Washington Street were to close on Monday, May 14 for nearly 2 years to build a wastewater tunnel.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A planned closure of River Road Monday has been delayed indefinitely.
The Metropolitan Sewer District said Sunday that the busy roadway will remain open until it can see whether planned construction can be done in a different way.
In a release, MSD says it determined in the past few days that there may be other ways to complete work on a waterway protection tunnel, and it wants to take time to analyze the alternatives before the long-term closing of River Road.
MSD plans to build an underground protection point for its Waterway Protection Tunnel. The digging of a "drop shaft" was going to close River Road and West Washington Streets near the Muhammad Ali Center through 2020.
The project will eventually help keep wastewater and rainwater from the existing sewer system from flowing into the Ohio River and Beargrass Creek.
