Louisville man posts Craigslist ad looking for someone to hug his mom
Joe Newland couldn't be with his mom for Mother's Day, so he posted a Craigslist ad looking for someone who could.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Louisville man, unable to see his mom on Mother's Day, went to great lengths to try to put a smile on her face.
Joe Newland lives in Louisville, but his mom lives in South Carolina.
"I don't get to see my mom much," he told WDRB by phone Tuesday. "My wife suggested I try to FaceTime her for Mother's Day, but I decided I could do better than that."
Instead, he decided to try to find her a surrogate son. He posted an ad on Craigslist Sunday afternoon called "I need someone to hug my mom on Mother's Day."
He wrote, "I live in Louisville and my mom lives in South Carolina. I need someone to stop by and give her a hug for me. Preferably, the person would be male with a beard, and non-violent and non-threatening. I can pay $20."
Two people took him up on the offer -- one person wouldn't talk on the phone, so Newland nixed that offer. The second person was downright creepy. …Nope.
"After Sunday, I got a few other calls but it was already past Mother's Day," Newland said. "The good news is -- in two weeks for Memorial Day weekend, I can go give her a hug in person."
Newland settled for a "Happy Mother’s Day" phone call instead.
But that doesn't mean he won't try again in the future.
"I figure, now that I've learned you have to post the ad a couple days in advance, maybe for her birthday I can get somebody then."
