End-of-year layoffs hit 224 at JCPS
Of that number, 205 are either the result of layoffs or overstaffing, a process in which their classes are cut because of factors like declining student enrollment and programming changes.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Jefferson County Public Schools has notified 224 employees that they will be let go as part of end-of-year cuts.
Of that number, 205 are either the result of layoffs or overstaffing, a process in which their classes are cut because of factors like declining student enrollment and programming changes. School instructors made up nearly half of those notified of their impending release at 106, according to the district.
Seventeen teachers were told that their contracts would not be renewed as were a bakery supervisor and employee relations specialist, according to JCPS.
Layoffs, overstaffing and contracts not getting renewed are normal at the end of school years, with most affected by the cuts recalled back to work for the upcoming school year. Many of those let go will likely be brought back for the 2018-19 school year to fill vacated or grant-funded positions, according to JCPS.
The district had until May 15 to notify teachers that their contracts would not be renewed.
Allison Martin, the district’s communications director, said most jobs affected in adult education are due to pending grant funding.
