POV | NIMBYs might have it right
NIMBY stands for “Not in my back yard!”
There will always be NIMBYs. NIMBY stands for “Not in my back yard!” Whenever a major a new business, or housing development, or community infrastructure is planned, NIMBYs pop up to say “Not here!”
They are out in full force against the Topgolf complex scheduled to be built on the old Sears site at the Oxmoor Mall. They say it will be too loud, the lights will be too bright, and it will add to traffic congestion.
I am a strong proponent of progress. Progress requires development and development has to go somewhere. In this case, however, I think I agree with the Hurstbourne residents. And for the record, I don’t live anywhere near Hurstbourne. Topgolf is a major, outdoor venue which, if it is as successful as everything thinks it will be, will attract hundreds of people nightly. These people do need lights, they will drink alcohol, and they will be loud.
It will also add a tremendous amount of additional traffic to an area that already has more traffic than its infrastructure can accommodate now.
I think it will be wonderful to have a Topgolf in Louisville. It will provide jobs, will pay taxes, and will provide entertainment for thousands of people. In a perfect world, I would love to see them find a less congested area.
At its present proposed location, I think the NIMBYs might have it right.
I’m Bill Lamb, and that’s my Point of View.
