U of L football team to celebrate 100th season
Kickoff for that celebration was on Thursday, when U of L Athletics Department unveiled a special logo to mark the anniversary -- but that's not all that's planned.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The University of Louisville football team will celebrate its 100th season this year.
Kickoff for that celebration was on Thursday, when U of L Athletics Department unveiled a special logo to mark the anniversary.
The first game of the season will be the Sept. 1 matchup between the Cardinals and defending national champion Alabama during the Camping World Kickoff game in Orlando.
During the season, fans will have the opportunity to vote on Louisville's All-Century Team, as the biggest names in the team's history will be highlighted in a position-by-position series. Based on the results, the team will be revealed on social media leading up to the Cardinals' first home game against Indiana State on Sept. 8. During that game, a commemorative poster will be given to fans, also revealing the final fan vote.
The team's first official season began in 1912, but the Cardinals took a brief hiatus from 1917 to 1920, and from 1943 to 1946. In the Cardinals' 100 seasons, the team appeared in 22 bowl games and won 512 games.
Other promotions will be announced at GoCards.com throughout the season.
