LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Heine Brothers' Coffee is preparing to relocate its original café to a larger building across the street in front of Mid-City Mall.

“We got our start at the corner of Longest Avenue and Bardstown Road on October first 1994,” Heine Brothers' Coffee President Mike Mays said. “It's a tiny, little shop, about 750 square feet; we [seat] about 15 people in there on a good day.”

The new location is inside the former Dunkin' Donuts on Bardstown Road. Heine Brothers' Coffee will close the old location on Thursday, May 31, at 11:00 a.m. The new location is scheduled to open on Friday, June 1, starting at 6:00 a.m.

“Here in the new location, we're going to have room for about 45 people,” Mays said.

Heine Brothers' Coffee has also hired six new baristas to staff the new, larger café, which will also include a drive-thru and parking.

“We're looking forward to deepening our roots in the neighborhood. We are also happy that the new location is still just a few steps from our longtime friends at Carmichael's Bookstore,” Mays said.

Carmichael’s Bookstore has shared a storefront with Heine Brothers’ since the coffee shop opened.

Estep says the bookstore has not confirmed if it will take over the Heine Brothers’ space, but it will make a decision soon.

“We were surprised just because this is their original location, but we understand,” Carmichael’s Bookstore manager, Kelly Estap said. “We've been in this building a long time too, and it's small and there's really nowhere to grow. This will be an opportunity for us to grow, if we take that space and expand. That will be an opportunity, honestly, that we really never thought we would have in this location. We are, of course, sad to see them go, because that connection has allowed us to have a coffee shop all these years without having to run a coffee shop.”
