LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – The Kentucky Department of Education’s associate commissioner and general counsel has resigned, effective Wednesday.

Kevin Brown, who joined KDE in 2004 as assistant general counsel, submitted his resignation Tuesday, KDE spokeswoman Nancy Rodriguez said. She did not provide a reason for his decision to step down but said it would not impact the hearing requested Tuesday by Jefferson County Public Schools challenging a recommended state takeover.

Brown, who also served as interim education commissioner in 2015, was not available for an interview, according to Rodriguez.

Interim Education Commissioner Wayne Lewis called Brown “a tremendous asset” for KDE who “leaves big shoes to fill.”

“He will be missed both professionally and personally,” Lewis said in a statement. “I thank Kevin for his leadership and his service to the KDE and the Commonwealth. As well, I thank him for the support he has provided to me in my first six weeks as interim commissioner.”

Brown is the second KDE official to resign this month. Earl Simms, the agency’s former charter schools director, left Friday to return to St. Louis with his family.
