Aaron Matas is a sports anchor/reporter at WDRB and considers himself lucky to be at the greatest college basketball crossroads in the country.

Aaron made the move to Louisville from Denver, Colorado, where he worked at 9NEWS. In more than six years in the Centennial State Aaron was able to cover a Super Bowl Championship, a college hockey national championship, Martin Truex Jr. and Furniture Row Racing’s season championship in Miami, as well as playoff hockey, baseball and basketball.

Prior to KUSA Aaron worked at WICD-TV in Champaign, Illinois, covering the Fighting Illini as well as a ton of high school sports. His first job out of college was in La Crosse, Wisconsin, a beautiful town right on the Mississippi River.

Aaron grew up in Edina, Minnesota, a suburb of Minneapolis. He attended college at Indiana University, where he met and eventually married his college sweetheart, Kelsey. (Side note: she works for a company out of Louisville, Colorado, and that city is pronounced LEWIS-ville, so apologies if there’s ever any mispronunciation or confusion.)

They live in Floyds Knobs with their two daughters,Winter and Aspen, one son, Canyon, and three dogs, Wire Haired Miniature Dachshund Lad/Shepherd mix, and English Bulldog. Aaron doesn’t get to watch a lot of sports at home but is fully up to speed on Peppa Pig and Minions if you have any questions.

As a family, the Matas' (or Matai, which is the accepted and made-up plural version of Matas) enjoy just about anything outdoors. Running, biking and hiking are all great, but a cold beverage on the patio is included in their love of the outdoors. At the same time, catching a movie, watching TV or going out to test local restaurants are some of their favorite activities as well!

Aaron has been recognized for his work at every stop of his career and has a passion for storytelling. Please reach out with any story ideas, tips of finding the right bourbon, or just to say hi at amatas@wdrb.com.
