LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- MSD officials say a cave-in on East Liberty Street has caused a delay of the closure of the intersection at Lexington Road and Baxter Avenue.

The intersection had been scheduled to close after Monday morning's rush hour.

Work on the East Liberty Street cave-in is only one block away from the intersection of Lexington Road and Baxter Avenue. A new date for the closure of the intersection is expected to be announced later this week.

Though it was previously announced that sidewalks would remain open while repairs were made to East Liberty Street, MSD says sidewalks in the affected area will be shut down.

MSD has been working on its Waterway Protection Tunnel underneath many busy Louisville streets. Part of Lexington Road between Hamilton and Baxter Avenues is already closed. The intersection was scheduled to close last week, but was delayed after the other section's work took longer than expected.

Officials have previously said that businesses and parking in the area will still be open when the intersection does shut down, but traffic between the Highlands and downtown will detour to Broadway and East Chestnut Street.

The work in the area allows the capture of nine sewer overflow points that currently discharge to Beargrass Creek.
