13-year-old girl hurt in Indiana school shooting was hit 7 times
The family of Ella Whistler released a statement saying she faces a long recovery after the attack.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- The family of a girl critically wounded during a shooting at her Indiana middle school says she was shot seven times, including in her face, neck and upper chest.
The family of 13-year-old Ella Whistler released a statement Monday saying she also suffered collapsed lungs and several broken bones, including in her jaw and back, during the May 25 attack at Noblesville West Middle School.
Her family says Ella suffered significant nerve damage and a severed vein in her spinal column. They say she's in stable condition and "continues to make progress," but faces a long recovery.
Ella underwent surgery at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis after the shooting. Her science teacher was also shot but not seriously wounded as he tackled the shooter.
Another student has been arrested in the attack.

Ella and her family deeply appreciate the outpouring of support, concern, and prayers from friends, family, and the community. Ella suffered very serious, life-threatening injuries from being shot 7 times in the face, neck, hand, and upper chest area. She underwent emergency, life-saving surgery after being airlifted to Riley, and her injuries include collapsed lungs; a broken jaw, clavicle, multiple neck vertebras, and ribs; a severed vertebral vein; significant nerve damage; and numerous related injuries.
Ella’s parents are proud of her incredible bravery and strength in facing this unspeakable tragedy. Ella’s current condition is stable. She continues to make progress but faces a long road to recovery. She will remain an inpatient at Riley Hospital for the foreseeable future, where she is receiving exceptional care from her medical team. She hopes to eventually return to her favorite activities of volleyball, cheerleading, and show choir.
