Family to donate organs of Louisville teen gravely injured in Florida car crash
The family of 18-year-old Alyssa Cook started a GoFundMe page to help with transportation and burial expenses.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A young woman from Louisville was gravely injured in a car crash in Panama City Beach, Florida early Monday.
The family of Alyssa Cook says she will not survive. The 18-year-old was a passenger in a car, when another vehicle drove into its path at 3 a.m. on June 4. Three others in the car were also seriously injured.
Cook's family wrote that "doctors met with us yesterday as a family and explained that by all standards Alyssa is no longer with us, and they are artificially keeping her alive."
Now, they are planning to donate her organs.
They have started a GoFundMe page to help with the cost of her mother and grandmother escorting her on the flight from Florida. Some of the money will also be used for her burial.
The family says Cook has the potential to save up to seven people with her organ donation.
The flight is planned for Friday, according to the website. The GoGundMe page has already raised more than $7,400.
