LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Leaders have finalized plans for a heavily traveled Shelby County road to get significant safety and traffic improvements.

Kentucky Route 53 will be widened from two to four lanes from I-64 to U.S. 60. It's designed for less congestion and easier traffic access to I-64 and to Shelbyville's downtown and east end.

The work includes a raised median and new side roads.

"The widening of KY 53 in Shelby County is incredibly important for many surrounding communities and Kentuckians who travel this section of highway daily," said Rep. Rob Rothenburger, in a statement. “The safety of travelers is priority number one, and I commend everybody involved in securing funding for this project.”

Utility work starts next year. Construction is set to begin in 2020.

“It is great to have the Secretary of Transportation come to Shelbyville to make an announcement regarding a project the people of Shelby County have been waiting for over 10 years,” said Sen. Hornback, described in a Kentucky Transportation Cabinet news release as a "longtime advocate" of the project.

“We also understand it’s a project that will take a couple of years or more to finish but will be a wonderful asset to the community.”
