LANE | Louisville City advances over Nashville in the U.S. Open Cup
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- And now it's on the quarterfinals.
Louisville City FC built a 2-0 lead and then held off fellow USL opponent Nashville SC for a 2-1 triumph Wednesday in the round of 16 of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at the University of Louisville's Lynn Stadium.
Paco Craig converted in the 24th minute from Oscar Jimenez and Louisville City took that 1-0 lead to the locker room. In the 58th minute, Paolo Del Piccolo received a pass from George Davis IV in the box, turned and fired with his left foot into the back post to make it 2-0. Nashville's Matt Lagrassa got the visitors back within one with a header in the 68th minute.
LouCity and Nashville had split games in the regular season with each team earning 2-0 wins on their home turf. Nashville came in on an 11-match unbeaten streak. They were two of just three teams remaining in the U.S. Open Cup that were not from Major League Soccer.
Louisville City will now travel to face the Chicago Fire of MLS in the quarterfinals July 18. The Fire beat LouCity in the 2015 U.S. Open Cup.
