Shantel Lanerie, wife of jockey Corey Lanerie, dies at age 42
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Shantel Lanerie, wife of Churchill Downs jockey Corey Lanerie, died Friday.
A release from Churchill Downs said the 42-year-old had been diagnosed with stage 1 breast cancer earlier this year, and had been undergoing chemotherapy treatments. But she was admitted to a hospital in Louisville on Thursday for a severe infection. She underwent emergency surgery but died Friday afternoon.
Lanerie is survived by her husband Corey and the couple's 10-year-old daughter, Brittlyn.
Churchill Downs president Kevin Flanery said in a statement, "This is a very sad day. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Corey, Brittlyn, family members and numerous friends as they endure this extremely difficult time. Please keep them in your thoughts and prayers."
Shantel was one of 144 women that walked in the Kentucky Oaks Day Survivors Parade this year. Jockeys also wore pink "Fight with Shantel" bands on their legs on Oaks Day. Many jockeys wore the same bands during Friday's racing program at Churchill Downs.
The Louisiana native was the daughter of a horse trainer and met her future husband when he began riding at Evangeline Downs in Opelousas, Louisiana in 1991. The couple married in 1997.
The Laneries moved to Louisville in 2005. The release from Churchill Downs said she was well known for hospitality and Cajun cooking around the track.
Corey Lanerie holds 15 Churchill Downs riding titles. Many in the thoroughbred racing industry are expressing their condolences.
In addition to her husband and daughter, Shantel is survived by her parents, Katie and Riley Hebert, brother Rylan Hebert, and in-laws Debbie and Gerald Lanerie.
At the time of her passing, the family was surrounded with support from fellow jockeys Robby Albarado, Brian Hernandez Jr., Ricardo Santana Jr., Juleien Leparoux and Samuel Camacho Jr., according to the release.
A memorial is being planned in Louisville with a funeral in Louisiana.
