Police are asking people to come to the 5th Division Headquarters to claim their property
LOUISVILLE, Ky (WDRB) -- Louisville Metro Police recovered many of the items thought to have been stolen by a suspected "gnome bandit" from yards in the Highlands, and now officers are looking for the suspect.
Many of the thefts of yard gnomes, patio furniture, plants and other items occurred earlier this month near the home of suspect Barton E. Bishop. Police released a 2015 mugshot of Barton from a prior arrest. They credit tips from the public for tracking him down.
Home security video of a porch prowler was posted by police, and that started a flood of tips from the public. Investigators found items stolen from at least 50 yards at his house and in his storage unit. But they haven't caught up with him. If you know of Barton's whereabouts, call 502-574-LMPD (5673).
Police say he was trying to sell items online and at a local peddlers mall. Now, victims like Rhonda Hoehler are being reunited with their items at LMPD's 5th Division.
"It's a little nerve-wracking, a little scary at first, that somebody had come that close to our front and had taken it," Hoehler said. "And to find out that he only lived a few blocks away was even more shocking."
Maj. Aubry Gregory said it's great to solve the case and recover the stolen property.
"It's not every day when things are stolen that you get the opportunity to get it back and make people whole and right again," he said. "And so hopefully today we'll start making a large part of our victims whole again."
LMPD is inviting residents to come by the 5th Division headquarters, located at 2301 Douglass Boulevard, to recover their items during the following times:
- July 5 -- 10 a.m. - 3 p.m.
- July 6 -- 10 a.m. - 3 p m.
- July 7 -- 9 a.m. - Noon
- July 8 -- 9 a.m. - Noon
- July 9-13 -- 10 a.m. - 3 p.m
Investigators believe the gnome thief is responsible for at least 50 thefts. They searched his home and a storage unit and say he was trying to sell the items online & at local peddlers malls. @WDRBNews pic.twitter.com/TFKEqfrkmg— Hayden Ristevski (@HaydenWDRB) July 5, 2018
