LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Some call it "Dixie Die-way," but Dixie Highway is another step closer to being much safer.

Louisville's New Dixie Highway Project reached a key milestone. Construction zones are now swapping locations from northbound to southbound and vice versa.

For drivers, that means some new lane changes. Affected areas run between Greenwood Road to Blanton Lane and Heaton Road to Upper Hunters Trace.

Even though road work can slow down traffic, neighbors are happy about the new sidewalks.

"More people get hit than anything down here," said Jackson Peters, who lives near Dixie Highway. "It wasn't that long ago, coming down here, we seen someone with a sheet over them that just got hit. I'm hoping that sidewalks does improve. It should be good and keep people safe in the long run."

The project is expected to be finished by the end of 2019.
