POLICE: 6-year-old dies after accidental shooting in southern Indiana
WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ind. (WDRB) -- Indiana State Police say a 6-year-old girl is dead after she was accidentally shot in the head in Washington County.
According to a news release, the Washington County Sheriff's Department received a call Friday around 10:30 p.m. A caller stated the child had been shot in the head in an accidental shooting.
Officers responded to a home on South PD Baker Road near Salem.
The child, identified by police as Makayla Bowling, was taken by air ambulance to Norton Children's Hospital in Louisville, where she died.
Police say Bowling's father was cleaning a handgun inside the home and believed it was unloaded. The weapon discharged and the girl was hit.
Authorities do not suspect foul play was involved in the shooting.
The incident remains under investigation.
