NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- A new park becomes a fitting tribute to a Kentuckiana man killed in a DUI crash.

Floyd County Parks and Recreation officially opened Kevin Hammersmith Memorial Park in New Albany on Saturday. The new park features a playground, baseball field and the Romeo Langford basketball court.

Hammersmith's sister, Tammy Persinger, said he would have loved the idea of the park as a lasting tribute. "I think this is going to be such a wonderful thing for Floyd County and for the community for years to come. And it is an emotional day because this is all in Kevin's name, and he would just be overwhelmed by everything that's going on here today," she said.

A man driving under the influence hit Hammersmith's car on Highway 111 back in 2011. The Indiana philanthropist died at the scene.

The day was filled with basketball, entertainment at the KFC Amphitheater stage, childrens' activities and health screenings.

The Kevin Hammersmith Memorial Park is located at 4400 Lewis Endres Parkway in New Albany right behind Northside Christian Church.
