LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A death investigation is underway after human remains were found in Valley Station on Sunday.

According to LMPD spokesman Dwight Mitchell, officers were sent to the 8900 block of Third Street Road to speak with someone who reported finding human skeletal remains nearby.

After searching the area, Mitchell says officers found the remains in a thick, wooded area in the 9300 block of Third Street Road.

The man who called police said he and his father were going fishing in a pond, when they found the remains.

Mitchell says the remains showed no obvious signs of trauma. Because of decomposition, police are not able to determine the gender of the victim or how long the remains had been in the area.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the cause of death.

Neighbors in the area say it is normally very quiet and they did not notice any police presence near their homes.

The LMPD Major Crimes Unit is investigating.
