POLICE: Elizabethtown mom arrested after 3-year-old left alone all day
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An Elizabethtown mother was arrested Sunday evening after police say her 3-year-old boy was left alone while she left for work.
According to an arrest report, the incident took place just before 8 p.m.
Elizabethtown Police say they were called to a church in the 200 block of North Miles Street, near Meadow Lane, in Elizabethtown, after someone reported that a 3-year-old boy was seen running around the street by himself.
When officers arrived, they met with the pastor of the church, who had brought the boy into the church. The pastor said the boy had been brought to the church by one of his neighbors, who lived in the 200 block of Henry Street, near the church. The neighbor told police that they had seen the boy playing alone outside in his underwear, before he ran across the street to play with other kids at the church.
Police say they went to the child's home to try to find his mother. When they arrived, the home was empty, but there was take-out food left on the table for the boy.
According to the arrest report, officers were eventually able to identify the mother as 29-year-old Blanca Martinez-Cordon. Police say she was working at a nearby restaurant.
When they confronted her, she allegedly told officers, through an interpreter, that she left her son alone at the house at 10 a.m. because she had to work. She also said she came home between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to check on her son and give him food to eat, before going back to work at 4 p.m.
She was arrested and charged with first-degree wanton endangerment. Martinez-Cordon is currently being held in the Hardin County Detention Center.
