NEW ALBANY, Ind. (WDRB) -- MESA Kids Cooking School is now open in New Albany, and kids are cooking up all sorts of meals while learning from professional chefs.

The cooking school opened July 16 at 154 E. Main Street in New Albany.

It offers cooking classes and summer camps for children, with professional chefs teaching the young chefs. Students will be taught basic cooking skills and different recipes from around the world at the Kids Cooking School.

"I think they're very open-minded," said Chef Brittany Scharlow. "They're creative. I think it's a skill that children should always learn so it's a great place for them to be creative."

The camps and classes are for children ages 7 to 14. Summer camps are available Monday through Friday from either 9 a.m. to noon or 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost for each week-long camp is $169 per students for members.

The cost for non-members is $199.

The first summer camp week started July 16, and runs through July 20, 2108, with a focus on Italian cuisine as part of a tour around the world camp series.

Other camps in the following weeks will highlight baking around the world, including French and Mexican cuisines.

Classes and camps will be taught by the region's top chefs and culinary instructors, including chef Liz Martino of Adrienne & Co. Bakery Cafe and chef Emie Dunagan of The 502 Bar & Bistro.

MESA also has a collaborative kitchen-classroom located at 216 Pearl Street.
