LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Norton Children's Hospital is getting national recognition for its treatment of children with diabetes.

On Thursday morning, the hospital's Wendy Novak Diabetes Center was awarded a certificate of distinction for in-patient diabetes care. It demonstrates Norton's focus on improving diabetes care, particularly for children going back-and-forth between the hospital and out-patient care centers.

"We felt confident that we had done something -- that we had changed diabetes care here at Norton Children's Hospital to be not only good, but excellent," said Dr. Kupper Wintergerst, division chief of pediatric endocrinology and director of the Wendy Novak Diabetes Center at Norton Children’s Hospital and the University of Louisville. "So when we received word that we had received the distinction? Incredible. That's the best word that I could use to describe it."

Norton Children's Hospital is now one of the only three children's hospitals in the country to receive the distinction.
