Former JCPS administrator named interim Manual principal
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) – Jefferson County Public Schools Superintendent Marty Pollio has named Kirk Lattimore, a retired administrator, as acting principal at DuPont Manual High School effective July 30.
Lattimore, who retired from JCPS as an assistant superintendent in 2016, replaces former Manual Principal Jerry Mayes, who was reassigned Friday following an investigation of racially insensitive comments he made to a pair of black students during a meeting.
Glenn Baete, assistant superintendent for high schools, announced Lattimore’s appointment in a letter to the Manual community Wednesday.
“Mr. Lattimore is a former colleague of mine and is a highly respected administrator,” Baete wrote. “I know you will welcome Mr. Lattimore, and he looks forward to meeting your families and welcoming you back for another year at Manual.”
Lattimore has extensive experience at JCPS, serving as a teacher, assistant principal and, for 13 years, principal of Crosby Middle School before his appointment as assistant superintendent in 2012, according to the district. He will serve as interim principal until Manual’s school-based decision making council selects a permanent replacement.
Lattimore won the Milken Family Foundation National Educator Award in 2001 and Principal of the Year in 2010, started the district’s Men of Quality Mentoring Program and has coached principals through the National Institute for School Leadership since he retired, including mentoring six JCPS principals, the district said.
“I am looking forward to maintaining the excellence of Manual and helping to ensure a smooth transition as the school searches for a new leader,” Lattimore said in a statement. “My main focus will be on ensuring that the students and teachers at Manual have everything they need in order to be successful.”
When contacted by WDRB News on Friday for comment, Mayes said he would consider the request but has not provided his reaction to his reassignment.
