LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Work will soon begin on a project to widen a busy stretch of Blue Lick Road.

Crews will widen the road from Preston Highway to the Gene Snyder Freeway in Okolona.

The first stage of the project will be to move utilities in the area. So in August, LG&E will begin a year-old project to install more than 100 utility poles. Crews will also start relocating gas mains and replacing service lines. That part of the project won't be finished until mid-2020.

A middle turn lane, curbs, and sidewalks will be added beginning in the summer of 2020. The entire project is scheduled to be finished in the spring of 2022.

The second phase of the road-widening project will tackle Blue Lick Road from I-265 to the Bullitt County line.

The goal is to improve safety and driving conditions in the busy stretch of the roadway.
