LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- The first day of Kindergarten is a big deal for kids, and JCPS wants to make sure your little one is ready.

The 5th annual Kindergarten ReadyFest was held Saturday at Western High School.

JCPS representatives were on hand to give students free backpacks, workbooks and supplies.

They also helped families complete the paperwork needed to sign up for free and reduced school meals.

Students were given free dental screenings, which is a requirement for kids starting Kindergarten.

"We want kids to get off to a good start and we want the whole family to feel good about starting school," Family Resource Center Coordinator Kathy Stoball said. "We do this event so kids have everything they need to start school."

Students also had a chance to take a ride on a school bus, so it's not scary for them on their first day.
