LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Medal of Honor recipient is being honored 142 years after he risked his life to save others in a historic battle.

The story of Saddler Sergeant Otto Voit's heroism during the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 was recently uncovered.

On Tuesday, a historical marker was unveiled at St. Stephen Cemetery where he's buried.

It shares the story of how Voit stood exposed to enemy fire for 20 minutes to cover for others who were trying to get water for troops desperately in need.

Voit was a German immigrant who settled in Louisville after his discharge from the Army.
