LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Police officers all over Louisville spent Tuesday night shaking hands, serving food and talking to the neighbors they protect.

As a part of National Night Out, an event designed to break down barriers and get community members interacting with law enforcement, LMPD First Division officers set up at Baxter Square Park in the Russell neighborhood.

Officers handed out crime prevention information while kids got to play games and check out the LMPD police helicopter and other equipment.

"It's really a good chance for us to interact with the community kids and their parents," LMPD Maj. Eric Johnson said. "They get to interact with police in a different way than they're normally used to."

National Night Out is not just about police. People also got a chance to meet local firefighters and EMS workers.
