LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Kentucky U.S. Senator Rand Paul delivered a letter from President Donald Trump to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Paul is on a trip to Russia to improve relations. In a release, his office said the letter was given to representatives of Putin because the Russian president has been out of Moscow all week.

Paul says he was honored to deliver the letter from President Trump. He says the letter emphasized the importance of working together on counter-terrorism, legislative talks and cultural exchanges.

Earlier this week, Paul helped coordinate a future trip to Washington, D.C. for members of the Russian Federation.  He also met with former Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev.
