New Oldham County drive-in theater ready to debut
OLDHAM COUNTY, Ky. (WDRB) -- It is lights, camera, action for Oldham County's newest entertainment spot: The Sauerback Family Drive-In premieres with a soft opening Thursday night.
The 40-by-80-foot screen is up, and the digital projector ready to roll. But the big show right now is the construction crew putting the finishing touches on the concession stand.
“I'm glad to be able to finally get some movies up on the screen and share the big dream with the community,” owner Stephen Sauerback said.
Drive-ins are considered a relic of the past, but Sauerback believes this old fashioned entertainment will draw a whole new crowd.
“People wanting to have experiences ... more than just activities,” he said. “And being able to do something that is unique, that is special.”
Sauerback said the theater will show first-run films, mostly PG-13 and below.
“Our priority would be to give preference to movies that will grab the largest market we can,” he said.
The first to appear on the big screen for the soft opening will be Hotel Transylvania 3.
Opening night begins at dusk. Customers who drive in for the soft opening will see a bit of a work still in progress. The landscaping will not be finished, and all the signs will not be up yet. But Sauerback said he is ready for the dress rehearsal.
“Screen and projector have all been tested and working (and) the sound system is up and running," he said. "We are ready to go.”
The second film of the soft opening double feature will be, appropriately, The Greatest Showman.
