LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Saturday was one of the last days of summer break for many kids, and the perfect time to bond with their community.

District three Councilwoman Mary Woolridge sponsored the "Unity in the Community Festival" in Algonquin Park Saturday.

500 backpacks and school supplies were given away. Families also enjoyed live music and free food.

It's an event to make sure kids are ready for school while helping their families prepare for the new year.

"We've done this every year for the last five years, this is my last year of doing this as most people know I didn't run for re-election, I'm retiring, so we're going out with a bang," Woolridge said.

Woolridge says she hopes the event will continue, because there's so much need in the community.
