LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- A Seneca High School student will be disciplined after officials said a gun was found in that student's backpack Monday.

According to an email from Principal Kim Morales that went home to parents of Seneca High School students, someone reported to school staff Monday that a student may have a weapon on campus. Administrators and a school resource officer then found an unloaded handgun in the backpack, according to Morales. No ammunition was found.

The student told school officials they brought the gun for their own safety because they felt threatened due to an "outside of school issue." That student is being disciplined by the school, according to Morales, but the specific disciplinary action was not specified.

It's not yet clear if the student will face criminal charges.
