LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- Someone anonymously paid off lunch debts for hundreds of students in Elkhart, Indiana.

The school system pays for lunch the first time students don't have the money, sometimes leaving the students with a negative balance. Those balances were wiped out after an anonymous donor stepped in.

"What they did is give us over $1,700 to pay off negative balances for our students in the elementary schools," said food service director Pam Melcher.

Toni Gianesi, the chief operating officer for Elkhart Community Schools says, "every family goes through struggles, has different struggles in life, and it's great to know that we have a community that will support each other when needed."

School officials say the $1,700 gift paid off all unpaid lunches.
