LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) -- An officer with the Louisville Metro Police Department, along with Santa and his helpers, were busy Thursday stopping lots of drivers who were actually happy to see them.

LMPD and Kroger teamed up to hand out $50 Kroger gift cards to surprised shoppers at the Kroger store on Outer Loop.

Santa and Mrs. Claus also gave the cards to people as they entered the store.

"Sometimes, it's good to do something nice to make people smile ... a random act of kindness," Officer Russell Miller said. "And that's what we want to do is reward people for being nice and having holiday cheer."

Stephanie Ratliff, Kroger's event coordinator, said one woman broke into tears and said that she really needed the gift card.
