Picking on the Pork (1/22/08)

New Kentucky Governor Steve Beshear says we face a much bigger budgetary shortfall than we'd been led us to expect. So his axing of 11 million dollars for a Cumberland County road project makes sense.

But Cumberland is the home county of State Senate President David Williams. And when it comes to picking fights this early, most people probably wouldn't rattle the cage of such a powerful potential nemesis.

My guess is Mr. Beshear is right to identify this project as unnecessary pork. And I applaud him for being willing to pull the tiger's tail right from the start instead of picking on relative weaklings. But Mr. Williams is hardly the only problem in this area.

The name of the game in politics these days - at every level and in every county -- is bringing home as much of this pork as possible. Which might be OK if we were swimming in money.

But we're not. And every dollar spent on a "road to nowhere" or equally pointless vanity projects intended only to generate votes is a dollar that won't be spent on Kentucky's real needs, like higher education or critical infrastructure.

So I applaud Governor Beshear for this opening salvo against waste. I only hope he'll keep looking for it wherever it can be found - even within his own party.
