Darts and Laurels (3/13/08)

Time for some more Darts and Laurels.

Our first Laurel goes to our partner in real-time closed-captioning, Norton Healthcare, for its plan to take over the long-vacant Dillard's building in Shively and transform it into a multi-faceted health center. This not only brings a positive presence to a part of the community that's often overlooked, but also bodes well for other retail development in the entire center.

Next, a Dart goes to anyone who has the audacity to question if police "overreacted" when they shot and killed a bank robber this past Monday.

Yes, the weapons he had in his possession - including the one he pointed at the cops - were only replicas. But there's no way they could have known that when faced with what appeared to be a deadly threat. And contrary to the TV western mentality of too many Internet message board regulars who think it would have been a simple thing to just "shoot him in the leg" or "shoot the gun out of his hand," it just doesn't work that way.

And finally, another Laurel goes to our state legislators for approving a 25-cent increase in Kentucky's cigarette tax, making it possible to avoid the outrageous 12% cut in higher education funding Governor Beshear originally proposed.

In a perfect world, the increase would have been even higher. But sometimes, you have to take what you can get.

I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my...Point of View.
