2007 was the best year in the history of WDRB and WMYO. And right now, we're doing even better in 2008 -- running 13% ahead of last year's revenue.
I tell you this because all I hear from the news media is recession, recession, recession. They seem to delight in telling you how bad the economy is. But TV stations are a reflection of the economy and we're going strong. Advertisers advertise with us because people continue to buy diapers, clothes, cell phones and food. And they continue to eat out, go to movies, buy cars and remodel.
While some costs are rising, others continue to drop - like high tech-electronics -- and there's opportunity in that. For example, the media obsess over falling home prices, but Kentuckiana hasn't experienced the big drops other regions have. And the media seldom mention that with fixed interest rates very low right now, it's a wonderful time to buy a home.
Yes, we can focus on everything that's wrong and be led into a recession, or we can continue to lead our lives, consume the things we need, do business in our community, and perhaps fight off a recession. My head's not in the sand, but I prefer to drink from a glass half full.
