20th anniversary of Carroll Co. bus crash

Wednesday marks the 20th anniversary of the worst drunk driving accident in history.

24 children and three adults were killed in the Carroll County bus crash.  It happened May 14th, 1988.

A church-owned school bus coming back from Kings Island was traveling home to Radcliff.  That's when Larry Mahoney crashed into the bus going the wrong way on Interstate 71.  Mahoney served nearly 10 years in prison for manslaughter.

The crash sparked safety changes to buses across the country.  Flame-retardant seats, push-out windows, roof hatches, and side emergency doors were installed.

Buses were also engineered to use diesel instead of gasoline.  Manufacturers began securing fuel tanks to prevent a puncuture like the one that caused the fire on the church bus.

A memorial is scheduled for 8:30 Wednesday night at the North Hardin Memorial Gardens in Radcliff.
