For the first time in years, Mitch McConnell's U.S. Senate seat isn't completely safe. While the powerful minority leader has a huge campaign war chest, his support of President Bush and the increasingly unpopular war in could give a strong opponent with impeccable credentials an outside shot next year.
But the prospect of Greg Stumbo being that opponent has to have McConnell's campaign staff licking their chops. Because when it comes to baggage, Stumbo is loaded.
Since they've been exhaustively reported, I'm not going to recite all of Mr. Stumbo's past indiscretions. But I'm sure Senator McConnell and his supporters will.
Meanwhile, Stumbo has said, "I think Senator McConnell has some skeletons in his closet too. If he chooses that route, I promise him it will be a two-way street."
Well, isn't that just ducky?
Mr. Stumbo may well emerge as the Democratic nominee. And if that happens, may the best man win.
But if voters really are to choose the best man, please - let it be on the basis of serious debate on the issues, not irresponsible mud-slinging. The temptation to go negative would be strong on both sides. But we should all hope both candidates would have the decency to rise above it. We deserve elected officials who can do that.
