Website can calculate cost of road trip

Everyone is feeling the pain of gas prices topping $4 a gallon in parts of Kentuckiana.

Some are changing their driving habits to cut costs.  And now there's a tool to caculate how much gas will cost before going on a road trip.

Roger Boyd with AAA says nationally, a gallon of unleaded gas costs about $3.93, which is what it costs in most of Kentucky.  But in Louisville, gas costs about 3-4 cents more.

In downtown Louisville, you'll also find gas prices as high as $419 a gallon for regular unleaded at the Shell Station on Brook and Jefferson and at the Chevron on Baxter and Broadway.

Boyd says urban areas will pay more for gas than more rural areas.  But high prices at the pump are also changing how people are driving.  Paulette Goetz says she's trying to combine trips as much as possible.  And Judy Braden says at least it doesn't seem so bad when she fills up when her vehicle's only at half a tank.

Despite gas near the $4 mark and higher, AAA says people are still taking many summer vacations, but they may be shortening the duration of their trips.  At Fuelcostcalculator.com, you can find out how much that road trip is going to set you back.

You put in the make and model of your vehicle, and where you're driving to, and receive a response that lets you budget for your trip.

For example, a trip from Louisville to Orlando is just over 1700 miles.  In a 2006 Ford Taurus, gas will cost you nearly $337 for a round trip.  That's still cheaper than flying a family of four.

While it's just the start of the summer travel season, some are wondering just how high gas prices will go.
