Let me make it clear I sit on the Board of the Louisville Orchestra. Whether that gives me an axe to grind, or gives me a perspective that lends credibility to my position is for you to decide.
I have received several very nasty letters from some musicians who blame those of us on the board for causing the Orchestra's probable bankruptcy. Let me tell you something. Every single person on that board agreed to serve, to donate their time and money, because we love the Orchestra. I don't know one board member who isn't just sick about this because we respect the musicians and love classical music.
But understand this: Board President Joe Pusatari was very clear and played his cards face up all through this negotiation. He told the musicians early last year that we needed to rework the contract before December 31st. For Tim Zavidil to say he was "shocked" by the recent turn of events is simply not true. He was told as directly as one human being can be told by another.
The Orchestra musicians got pitifully bad advice from their lawyer in New York and their local union representatives, who refused to allow the musicians to hear the story straight from Joe Pusateri. Now, I'm afraid, it's too late.
I'm Bill Lamb, and that's my...Point of View.
