Greater Louisville Inc. - The Metro Chamber of Commerce -- applauds the strong support of Louisville and Jefferson County shown by Governor Fletcher in this past legislative session.
However, we are disappointed that his budget eliminated $73 million in agency bond funding for projects essential to the University of Louisville, and connected those cuts to funding for Louisville's new arena.
Today's competitive economy values knowledge, with an undeniable relationship between educational attainment and economic growth and opportunity.
We stand with Dr. Ramsey and U of L in supporting all efforts that advance higher education as vital to our prosperity.
Compared to its peer institutions, U of L's current operating budget is funded significantly below the state's own assessment of its needs to be competitive.
Any further budget cuts will only jeopardize the progress of U of L, our community and all of us throughout the entire Commonwealth.
GLI's position - along with many others - has consistently been that a downtown, multipurpose arena was a community and Commonwealth project - not a University of Louisville project.
In no way should U of L's funding requests have been linked to those for the Louisville arena.
U of L and our community cannot shrink our way to greatness.
Only by taking bold - and balanced - steps forward, in education and community amenities, can we achieve our vision of becoming a true economic hot spot.
