For the next month, politicians will jam the airwaves with ads for the November election. But Louisville will host an election of a different kind-a referendum of sorts- at St. Joseph Children's Home October 21 and 22.
That's when the National Jug Band Jubilee will showcase outstanding jug bands from five states. It's the bid of a local non-profit organization to make Louisville the hub of jug band music, as it was a century ago. Many say jug band music began right here in Louisville. Its fans call it "America's Happiest Music."
Memphis, America's other hotbed of early jug bands, is a logical rival for this resurgent novelty music.
Greater support from Metro government, Greater Louisville Inc. and corporate Louisville is essential to assure that the Jubilee stays right here in years to come. By attending this festival, American music lovers will be voting to keep the Jubilee here. A great turnout will assure it. Otherwise, Memphis could take it away from us.
We urge community leaders to actively support this festival in the days remaining before the third weekend in October.
