It may be a week before two barges are raised from the Ohio River

It could be more than a week before salvage crews can raise two sunken barges from the bottom of the Ohio River.

The barges sank on Friday near the Belle of Louisville.  There have been two other river accidents in the area since then.  Buoys mark where the sunken vessels are in the river.

The barge company says the first step in recovering the barges is to continue offloading the cargo. Scott Noble of the Ingram Barge Company, explains, "We are, in fact, waiting on the current to further slow down, we believe that possibly on Thursday we will reach that point where our salvage operations and necessary diving can commence."

The Belle of Louisville has suspended all activity due to the accident, but operators hope to be fully operational by Thursday.
