Dow, Nasdaq up; La Grange Farmers and Artisan Market opens Saturday
Friday the 13th, and Colgate University rings the opening bell on the New York Stock Exchange.
Colgate has a connection with the number 13; the university was founded by 13 men with 13 dollars and 13 prayers in 1817.
Anheuser Busch has begun talks with Mexico's Grupo Modelo about a combination of the brewers. It's a move that could stop an unsolicited bid by Belgian InBev to take over the maker of Budweiser.
Anheuser Busch already owns about 50% of the Mexican brewer, best known for its Corona brand.
Saturday, downtown La Grange will be humming with business for area farmers. It's the summer's grand opening of the La Grange Farmers and Artisan Market.
Market Manager Jennifer Watson says, "It grows every year, we're up to about thirty vendors this year." Watson says the courthouse square in La Grange will be packed with more than 20 farmers and artists Saturday selling their wares to hundreds of customers.
The market opens at eight o'clock Saturday morning, as it will every Saturday through October. For La Grange, it brings people into town and for many of the farmers it is their livelihood.
Watson says, "There are several farmers that set up, that this is their living, and then there's other farmers that set up, this augments their living because many farmers have to hold another job in today's economy...whether it's a full-time or a part-time job, nobody comes and does this as a lark, they really invest their time, their energy, their land."
For Saturday's grand opening, there will be an on-site demonstration from Glassworks in addition to several other artists.
